There are two commonly used trap types for SLF. These are very effective against the nymphs as they move up and down and between plants. Sticky bands plus chicken wire can be banded around tree trunks. Alternatively, circle trunk traps are very effective. These are available to purchase online or can be made at home.
Trapping should be done on host trees that are used during the early season (May–July) such as tree of heaven and black walnut but the nymphs may also be abundant on rose and grapes and other plants. Traps can be used for the adults as well but because SLF adults do not move up and down the tree as much, they are less effective.
