- Q: I have many deer around my property, what can I do to control and manage them?
- A: Deer are protected during all times of the year except for various hunting seasons. All methods of destroying deer using traps, poisons, toxic baits, etc., are illegal. Therefore other methods should be used. Simple ways to keep deer from your property are locating your garden in an area that is removed from direct wooded cover and other favorite spots of deer, harvest crops in a timely manner, use a dog on a run near your landscape or garden as a deterrent or construct fencing. Other methods that involve repellents such as odors, noise, and taste can be employed to discourage deer contact. Contact your local RCE office for hints and tips on deer control.
Note: Information attained from RCE fact sheet FS093, Deer in the Vegetable Garden, Butler and Ghidiu.
