What is the Seniors Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)?

The purpose of SFMNP is to help seniors eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs by purchasing them from local farmers. SFMNP is a grant-funded program that provides coupons to eligible seniors to purchase food from participating farmers' markets, farm stands, and community supported agriculture programs. The amount of money seniors receive varies, depending on the state of residence. In New Jersey, eligible seniors receive $50 per year.

How Do I Qualify for SFMNP?

To participate in SFMNP, you must meet two criteria:

  • Age: 60 years and older
  • Income:
    • Gross income (i.e., income before deductions for income taxes, Social Security taxes, insurance premiums, bonds, etc.) is equal to or less than the income poverty guidelines, increased by 185%.
    • View the income guidelines to see if you qualify.

Where Do I apply for SFMNP?

Find the local agency that administers the SFMNP in your New Jersey county on the NJ Department of Health website. Services are also available outside of New Jersey. SFMNP benefits are typically distributed by the County Office on Aging. However, there is variation from county to county. For example, in Gloucester County, NJ SFMNP benefits are distributed by the Gloucester County Division of Senior Services; in Union County, NJ, the Union County Division on Aging administers SFMNP benefits. SFMNP is increasingly becoming digital. Some states still use paper vouchers.

Many states now offer electronic benefits cards or mobile apps that allow participants to manage benefits and redeem them using a QR code. In New Jersey, SFMNP benefits are digital. Contact your county's agency for more information on benefit distribution. Regardless of where you live, all counties require that you show proof of county residency to apply for the SFMNP. Some examples of proof of county residency are providing a driver's license, lease, or utility bill with your address on it.

Where Can I Redeem SFMNP Benefits?

Farmers must apply to participate in and accept SFMNP benefits. See participating farmers' markets and farm stands in your county. When you shop with an authorized farmer, show the New Jersey FMNP QR code at check out. The cashier will scan your QR code and show you your remaining balance. It's that easy!

Why Is SFMNP So Important?

Eating a well-balanced diet with a variety of nutritious foods is an important part of staying healthy as you age. The SFMNP helps seniors buy fruits and vegetables by purchasing them from local farmers. Fruit and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet, especially for seniors. They provide important vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants to help maintain a healthy weight, stay energized, and lower the risk of developing chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, some cancers, and diabetes.

If you think you're eligible to participate in the SFMNP, contact the agency that administers the program in your area. Visit the New Jersey Department of Health web site for an updated listing of agencies throughout the state. Your local agency will guide you through their process.
