Cost Recovery and Revenue Enhancement Information
Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Cooperative Extension is at a critical programmatic and financial crossroads. The portfolio of federal, state, and local dollars available to support Rutgers Cooperative Extension programming has significantly eroded over the past two decades, both nationally and in New Jersey. Concurrently, the number of Rutgers Cooperative Extension faculty and staff and the breadth of Rutgers Cooperative Extension programs have been steadily reduced. Recently proposed state budget cuts to Rutgers University and Rutgers NJAES for FY 2006-2007 further exacerbate the situation and make addressing budgetary shortfalls an issue of immediate and paramount importance.
Rutgers Cooperative Extension can no longer conduct "business as usual." Instead, faculty and staff must act now to take ownership of our future. This means thinking like "intrapreneurs" (i.e., entrepreneurs within Rutgers Cooperative Extension) in the development, marketing, and delivery of educational programs. In short, the organization needs to think of its programs and services as "products" for which an appropriate "price" is charged. Like small business owners, we need to develop and "sell" products that consumers will "buy" and aggressively communicate these deliverables to those who can benefit from our expertise.
