Table 1.
Total reported cultivated acres, deer affected acres, and minimum and maximum loss estimates in Division regions for 1997.
| Division Region | Sample size answering questions | Sum of cultivated acres | Sum of deer 'affected' acres | Percent of cultivated acres 'affected' by deer | Sum of minimum $ loss estimates | Sum of maximum $ loss estimates |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northern region | 662 | 66,361 | 28,808 | 43% | $1,760,599 | $2,866,503 |
| Central region | 539 | 61,960 | 20,573 | 33% | 2,210,652 | 3,432,243 |
| Southern region | 636 | 68,721 | 18,664 | 27% | 1,761,700 | 3,814,582 |
| Statewide | 1837 | 197,043 | 68,046 | 34% | $5,732,951 | $10,113,328 |
|
'Affected' acres does not mean 100% of a crop was destroyed on those acres. For example, in a 100 acre field reported 'affected' by deer, perhaps only 12 acres were 'affected' with a 50% yield loss--resulting in a 6% overall loss to the producer. |
