Maria Coleman Young, M.S., has been an employee of Rutgers Cooperative Extension since 1987. A native of Virginia, she received her B.S. degree in home economics education and a master of science from Howard University, with a concentration in child development and family relations. Her responsibilities include administration of nutrition education programs, as well as a funded Strengthening Adolescents Family Enrichment (Project SAFE) grant. Programming efforts focus on financial management, parent skill training, and nutrition education for an economically and ethnically diverse population. Successful development of collaborative relationships with over 30 organizations and agencies resulted in an appointment to the Passaic County One-EZ-Link Executive Committee by the county Board of Chosen Freeholders. Young also serves as co-chair of the county's Grandparents as Parents Task Force and is a facilitator for the Paterson Alliance. Her curriculum guide, Controlling Your Finances: The Emotional Aspects of Money, has been utilized by educators throughout America and Canada.
