New Jersey has five physiographic regions based on the underlying geology: the Ridge and Valley, Highlands, Piedmont, Inner Coastal Plain, and Outer Coastal Plain.

A list of native riparian plants has been compiled for each region of New Jersey. These lists do not include every riparian species found in a region; they emphasize the plant species which are most common and those which are reasonably available from commmercial nurseries.

Plant lists are general lists based on the entire region. Because site conditions and species composition vary throughout each region, every listed species may not be appropriate for all sites within the region. Therefore, to select species, an assessment of the site
