Conference to Address Financial Planning Concerns

Money 2000 and Beyond Rutgers Cooperative Extension is sponsoring a day-long personal finance conference, "MONEY 2000TM and Beyond: Financial Strategies For Your Future XII," on Saturday, May 3. The program will be held from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm at the Haggerty Education Center at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, 53 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Town Township, NJ.

The conference is presented as part of an ongoing campaign, called MONEY 2000TM, designed to encourage New Jersey residents to increase their savings and reduce household debt. The cost is $23 for MONEY 2000 participants and $25 for all others. A continental breakfast, lunch, and printed materials are included in the registration fee.

The keynote address is "Save For Your Future: The Key to Financial Security in Later Life." The speaker is Paul Doersam, Deputy Regional Commissioner of the Social Security Administration. The conference is one of ten regional "kick off" sites for Save For Your FutureTM Month, sponsored by the U.S. Social Security Administration and the American Savings Education Council. The presentation will discuss benefits of savings and suggested savings strategies. Exhibits by non-profit agencies providing financial services, a choice of morning and afternoon workshops, and personal finance-oriented door prizes will round out the day's activities.

The morning workshop choices are "Financial Tips For the 2000s" by Dr. Barbara O'Neill, CFP, Rutgers Cooperative Extension Interim Financial Resource Management Specialist, and "Ignoring The Noise: An Analysis of Current Market Conditions and Equity Returns" Scott Budde, Director of Equity Portfolio Analytics for the investment company TIAA-CREF. The afternoon workshop choices are "Making Retirement Income Last a Lifetime: Methods of Insuring Adequate Resources in Longer Retirements" by Keith Davenport, CFP, Associate Director, TIAA-CREF Institute, and "Secrets to Building and Maintaining an Investment Portfolio For All Seasons" by Patricia Brennan, CFP, of Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Morris County.

There will also be an optional post-conference workshop from 3:15 to 4:00 pm titled "Reverse Mortgages: Enjoy a More Comfortable Retirement in Your Own Home." The speaker is Jane Hagen, Reverse Mortgage Program Manager with Wells Fargo Mortgage, Inc.
