Answer

How can I find a qualified financial advisor that will look out for my interests rather than his or her own?

Good question! We get this one a lot. To find a quality financial advisor, look for three things: competency (experience, references from existing clients, sample plans), credentials (CFP, ChFC, CPA, etc.) and compensation (fee only, commission only, or fee and commission). Interview at least three financial planners and choose the one who takes the time to listen to your needs and has the knowledge and experience to handle your financial affairs at a reasonable price. For names of planners in your area, call the Institute of Certified Financial Planners at 1-800-282-PLAN or the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors at 1-888-Fee-ONLY.
