In May 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified a nationwide increase in illnesses linked to a specific and very common type of Salmonella. CDC estimates place the number of illnesses as 3 to 4 times the typical levels expected for this time of year.
Using information from the CDC, public health officials in 10 states began investigating to learn more. These investigators determined that shell eggs from a specific company (Wright County Egg, based in Galt, Iowa) appeared to be associated with many--but not all--of the local outbreaks. Officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are currently conducting an extensive investigation at the firm in Iowa.
Since the outbreak was announced, Wright County Egg Farms, as well as another Iowa based egg producer (Hillandale Farms, New Hampton, Iowa) have both issued recalls for their products. None of the recalled product appears to have been sold in New Jersey. Consumers that believe they might have purchased eggs that are part of the recall are encouraged to check the list of recalled products, and return any affected eggs for a full refund.
